HAMPTON, Ga. (March 19, 2013) – The exhilarating Global Rallycross Championship will invade Atlanta Motor Speedway and compete on a custom-designed track in the Global Rallycross Atlanta event on Saturday, Aug. 10.
A new era of racing, the Global Rallycross Championship combines the thrill of four-wheel racing with unique course designs featuring dirt and asphalt surfaces, drift turns, airborne jumps and water elements. The event features a series of elimination heat races, which will produce 10 drivers to compete in a winner-take-all final to determine the Atlanta Global Rallycross Champion.
Competitors in the Global Rallycross Championship event at Atlanta Motor Speedway will be coming directly from the Global X Games in Los Angeles, where they will compete in the Global Rallycross Championship the prior weekend. Top GRC drivers like Ken Block, Brian Deegan, Tanner Foust, Bucky Lasek and Dave Mirra will descend on Atlanta from across the globe to compete at the historic facility.
“The addition of the Global Rallycross Championship to the 2013 Atlanta Motor Speedway schedule brings a highly-unique event featuring international competitors in an ultimate test of driving skills,” said Ed Clark, Atlanta Motor Speedway President and General Manager. “The series features a broad demographic appeal and will be a great addition to the sports landscape in Atlanta.”
“GRC is extremely excited to be on board with Atlanta Motor Speedway for the 2013 season,” said Colin Dyne, Global Rallycross Championship CEO. “It’s a great youth market and we are thrilled to bring our unique form of action motorsports to all the fans in Atlanta.”
GRC vehicles can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 1.9 seconds. They are production-based cars based on models that can be purchased at local dealerships and customized. This allows fans of the series to connect to their favorite drivers piloting their vehicles on the track.
In addition to the Atlanta Motor Speedway round, the 2013 GRC Series will feature events across the United States, as well as in Brazil, Germany and Spain.
The Aug. 10 Global Rallycross Atlanta event kicks off an exciting race month for Atlanta Motor Speedway, which will conclude Labor Day weekend with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series AdvoCare 500, Aug. 30-Sept. 1.
