LOCATION: Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Las Vegas, NV
IN BRIEF: The third and final race of the $25,000 Discount Tire-America’s Tire Cup saw a thrilling battle between evenly matched teammates Tanner Foust and Brian Deegan. Tied in points through the first two rounds, whichever driver outplaced the other at Las Vegas Motor Speedway was almost guaranteed to earn the cash bonus.
Foust and Deegan, for the sake of making it interesting, added a dollar bet of their own to the mix, and both drivers raced harder for that dollar than they ever had in their lives. With the still-unheralded Toomas Heikkinen, and later three-time European champion Sverre Isachsen, on their tails, it became clear early on that the fans were going to get their dollar’s worth on the battle for first. Eventually Foust took the victory, the giant cardboard check, and—perhaps most significantly—a signed dollar from his teammate and rival.
EFFECTS: The Foust-Deegan battle would carry on through the season finale at SEMA, where they would again finish 1-2, but this race would say more about the drivers who finished third and fourth. Isachsen’s podium would provide a much-needed boost for the still-developing Subaru PUMA Rallycross Team, as they would go on to two more podiums from Isachsen and greater consistency in 2013. Meanwhile, Heikkinen would add another top five in the season finale at SEMA, and go on to eight podiums in the first eight races of 2013 to clinch the Supercar title.
